CFPB Employees Can Vote For NTEU Representation

|
The wheels are in motion for a union representation election at CFPB. The National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) today filed a petition for an election with the federal agency that oversees labor-management relations. This step in the process was possible because more than the legally-required number of CFPB employees have signed forms committing to become NTEU members if it wins the election.
If NTEU wins the election, which will be conducted by the Federal Labor Relations Authority (FLRA) and most likely occur in March or April, NTEU will then be in a position, as the exclusive representative of the CFPB workforce, to address a variety of issues employees have raised.
These include travel, performance evaluations, staffing, workload and more. NTEU already is a major presence in the federal financial regulatory structure, given its representation of employees at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Securities and Exchange Commission, Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and National Credit Union Administration.
Once the FLRA verifies NTEU’s petition, representatives of the parties will meet to discuss details of the secret-ballot election. These questions will deal with when the election will occur, who is eligible to vote and how the election will be conducted—that is, electronically, by mail or some other means. We will also provide a frequently-asked questions document as the election period approaches.

I am pleased to tell you that with the filing of a petition for an election, NTEU has moved a key step forward in its effort to bring to CFPB employees the kind of workplace representation NTEU is well-known and highly-respected for providing federal employees. NTEU already represents many federal financial regulatory employees, including those as the FDIC, SEC, OCC and NCUA.
Because of our long involvement with the frontline workers so vital to the effective functioning of the financial regulatory system, NTEU is uniquely positioned to address the needs and issues of CFPB employees. A number of your colleagues at CFPB came from those agencies and were members of NTEU in their previous workplaces.
I want to stress to you that along with protecting and advancing your rights, our goal at CFPB is to help ensure a highly successful agency. This is the approach we always have taken, because at NTEU, we understand that an agency with sufficient resources and personnel, along with a workforce that is treated with dignity and respect, will be an agency well-equipped to meet its mission on behalf of the public.
The filing of this petition is a milestone, and it shows we are making good progress on bringing first-class representation to you. It is important, however, that we both continue and build on that progress and the support we have. The stronger we are going into the election, the stronger we can be on your behalf after it. You can help by talking with your colleagues about NTEU and the positive steps it will mean for CFPB employees and your agency over both the short- and long-term.
At this point, I anticipate the Federal Labor Relations Authority will conduct this election in March or April, and I will keep you fully informed as things progress.
Colleen M. Kelley
